Super-Lightweight Advanced Composites
Super-lightweight advanced composite project involved systematic scientific research to develop multifunctional structural materials to enable super lightweight nanomaterial-based structures. The work conducted included empirical and theoretical investigations in nanomaterials fabrication, processing, and characterization including tool development for aerospace structural materials to resolve critical problems to enable the advancement of net shape fabrication of multifunctional materials. Various forms of emerging nanomaterial systems were investigated including carbon nanotube aligned arrays, yarns and sheets, boron nitride nanotubes and graphene sheets. Realizing the full mechanical capabilities of individual nanotubes and graphene is a challenging problem that has not yet been solved primarily due to the difficulty in obtaining load transfer between the carbon nanotubes or graphene sheets. Practical use of these nanomaterials requires creating stable and strong linkages between nanotubes without sacrificing their mechanical advantages.
